Meet our new Ambassador

Betty Riches has been named the Ambassador for the Collingwood Lawn Bowling Club for the 2021 season!

At 98 years old, Betty is perfect for this role as she shows others that age does not matter. She plays lawn bowling three times a week and says that the Collingwood Lawn Bowling Club is her new best friend. She loves to be outdoors playing a relaxing game with friendly people.

Betty did not take up the sport until she moved to Collingwood about 10 years ago. It just so happened that the seller of her house left a set of lawn bowls behind. Her curious nature encouraged her to hunt for a lawn bowling green which led her to 45 Paterson Street – the Collingwood Lawn Bowling Club.

She credits her long-lived life to the fact that she stays active doing a mild form of outdoor exercise. She says “by playing the games, my spirits are lifted and I gain my mobility”. Betty consistently scores almost every end. It would be unusual if she didn’t have at least one bowl on the jack. Every team wants Betty on their side!

In 2021, the Collingwood Lawn Bowling Club is welcoming all seniors to play 3 free-of-charge rounds. Stop in to meet Betty and learn a new game!

New This Year: A Super Relaxing Program for Sensational Seniors

The Collingwood Lawn Bowling Club is making changes to the game of lawn bowling. We’ve launched a new program called Senior Participation: Accessibility, Fitness, and Social Inclusion. This new program brings a variety of playing times, attire, and more support for our seniors!

With the money we received from Service Canada we are making drastic changes to help seniors stay active and healthy

  • We have available lighter and smaller bowls
  • We have launchers (similar to he stick in curling) to deliver the bowl from a stand up position
  • We have shortened the playing time of the game
  • We have shortened the Jack . We have a shorter distance to roll the bowl.

We are willing to modify the game to meet the needs of our seniors!

Recommended by Medical Professionals

With the second highest proportion of seniors amongst sub-regions in Ontario (27%) the South Georgian Bay area is fortunate to have a plethora of options which support staying active. The scientific evidence is clear that a higher level of physical activity is associated with reduced risk for many illnesses as well as an increased sense of well-being. As such, I applaud the initiative of Norma Gee, president of the Collingwood Lawn Bowl Club, who is introducing a new program designed to increase accessibility and fun while encouraging participation in a well established local sporting tradition. I know many of our local seniors will benefit from the social interaction as well as the physical activity involved
